This is where everything ends and starts all over again.
When the grapevines have finally lost all their leaves and the cordons are left completely bare, we walk in the rows and all the work that we have put in the vineyard stares back at us and make us proud of having accomplished the miracle of another perfect harvest.
Yes it does feel like a little miracle because so many farmers do not believe that growing organic grapes without "cheating" is possible in our area.
To all of them we just reply that nothing is impossible if you are willing to engage in an impossible amount of work.
This year we experimented picking our grapes during the night.
We got up at 3.30 and picked until sunrise...I personally loved it and I think I could say the same for everybody that helped us, it is really magical to reach for those beautiful bunches under a star filled sky.
Other than the poetry of nocturnal harvest we have found that especially for a small winery like ours without fancy refrigeration systems, getting the grapes already cold in the cellar results in an incredible improvement. We will definitely stick harvesting at night in the future.
